Thank you for your unique brand of quarterbacking, it really has been one of the top stories of the NFL season. (Full Disclosure: I am pro-Tebow, but will try to keep this post even-handed).
Whether you believe that Tim Tebow can be a “real” NFL quarterback or not – you have to enjoy what he is doing on the field. Yes, his press coverage has been exhaustive – it seems like every SportsCenter has lead with a Tebow piece. Yes, he is barely completing 50% of his passes and this is a “passing league” now. And, yes 1st and 10 or Cold Pizza or whatever it is called anymore always uses number 15 as a debate topic….but isn’t it better than hearing about if Favre will or will not retire or un-retire for the 18th time?
In fact, I think that we are really doing Tebow and the Broncos a disservice by endlessly debating his viability under center. Because while Stephen A. Smith (Why is Stephen A. Smith back by the way? I guess that’s a post for another day) and Skip Bayless and media types are bickering back and forth about Tebow’s throwing motion and rushing style of play, they are potentially missing out on just sitting back and seeing one of the best stories in the NFL unfold in front of them – and its not only about Tebow.
The Broncos started the year at 1-4 and their season was looking like it was all but over. Enter Tebow….He rattles off 7 wins and one loss since going under center for Denver ( A QB win percentage that is only bested by Aaron Rodgers and the Packers this season). None of the wins have been especially pretty, but each win has been like watching a sports movie…the underdogs coming from behind and overcoming sizable odds to snatch victory from the clutches of defeat (admittedly with some big mistakes/boneheaded plays from the opposing teams at times). Whether it has been through an improved defense, some stellar kicking, and yes…Tebow’s quarterback play, this is REAL reality TV (Except for the Kardashians…all of that is 100% real. If Kim and Kris can’t make it, who can? But I digress). No one could have scripted the Miami dolphins giving up 15 points in the final 3 minutes of Tebow’s first start. The same goes for the 90+ yard drive that Tebow orchestrated and capped off with the longest game winning rushing TD in NFL history against the Jets, or Marion Barber completely losing his mind in the 4th quarter and overtime just this last week (this is a particularly sore subject for JP). Ditto for Von Miller going bananas against the KC Chiefs and Tebow tossing multiple TD passes against the Minnesota Vikings (an equally sore subject for myself). As you can see from the game recaps here, its not all about Tebow, but the Broncos have been playing better ball since he took the starting job. Coincidence?
The point I am trying to make is that we can debate all day long about whether or not he is a real NFL quarterback – which is a debate I don’t particularly understand because if he is playing games under center in the NFL, wouldn’t that make him a real quarterback? (apologies, that wasn’t quite as even-handed), but while we dissect Tebow’s viability, he and the Broncos continue to turn out some of the most entertaining games in the NFL week-in and week-out. Supposedly the Bronco’s game against the Patriots is in the the process of being flexed out to Sunday Night Football this week taking Tebow Time into prime time…if that is the case, my advice would be to tune in, sit back, grab a beverage of your choice, and just enjoy what happens. There’s some really entertaining football going on.
Take care,
BK
